Opening its doors in 1994 in a converted smokehouse in Clerknwell, Chef Fergus Henderson's St. John Restaurant became an instant cult. The whitewashed walls and a clean simplicity to the restaurant was the perfect environment for the development of Fergus's "nose to tail eating" philosophy.

There really are very few parts of an animal that haven't found its way onto a plate at St. John. The food is British with a tiny nod to eating philosophies of the lands across the Channel. Although clearly not a restaurant for the non meat eating community, for those Carnivores out there, a true treat.
Choose from roast bone marrow, chitterlings (Pig's intestines) or perhaps a whole suckling pig which feeds up to 16. If you're thinking these perhaps don't sound like the most appealing of options you should put your preconceptions to the back of your mind and embrace the true carnivore lurking inside.
Finish your meal with some of the creations from the restaurants bakery, we recommend sampling possibly the best Eccles cake we've ever eaten. It is worth taking a trip to their sister restaurant, St. John Bread & Wine, in Spitalfields for one of these alone.
By the way, if you hurry you can catch the end of Squirrel season which ends shortly this month. Who could possibly resist?

Light up in style - Dunhill Lighters

With polite society frowning upon the ever dwindling number of smokers, surely the accesories that go with it can be appreciated by all? Dunhill, in our mind, make some of the finest smoking paraphenalia available. This first started in the 1920's with their prototype Unique model being mounted on a Colman’s mustard tin. Two strong Dunhill characteristics in those days were one-hand operation and first-time lighting, both certainly unique at the time. The 1950's really marked the end of austerity and the beginning of the post-war development period. The harsh wheel was replaced by the long roller for effortless operation. The mid-fifties were noted for research into a quite new, Revolutionary power source-butane gas. Developing suitable miniaturized valves was a major problem to over-come but in 1958 the first Dunhill gas lighter, the Rollagas and Aldunil, were launched. A new era in lighter design had begun.

With luxury materials and timeless designs, take the Alligator Rollagas (below) for instance, can there be many better ways to show effortless sophistication in such a mundane activity as lighting a Cigarette? If you are one of the smoking minority, invest in a Dunhill Lighter, if not, you never know when one might come in handy.

Started nearly 40 years ago, Cutler and Gross are still making some of the finest Spectacles money can buy. We've been a big fan of these Glasses for a number of years now being of a bespectacled nature.

From their classic designs to the choice of colours and finishes, Cutler and Gross hit the mark on every count. A particular favourite of ours are the Tortoiseshell half rims and their solid rimmed brothers, with no two Tortoiseshell being the same. Feeling slightly more adventurous? The most extraordinary Georgian - John Hunter

We highly recommend a trip to the Hunterian Museum based inside the Royal College of Surgeons, London. John Hunter's amazing collection was purchased by the government in 1799 and although two thirds of the accumulated pieces were destroyed by bombs in Word War II it is still a truly fascinating place to visit. From countless intriguing specimens arranged in the Crystal Gallery to a vast array of gruesome looking surgical tools bringing the history of surgery to life, the Hunterian Museum will leave you wanting to find out more about the man behind this extraordinary collection.
The picture above was taken pre World War I and gives you an idea of how vast the collection was, for a virtual tour of the current collection visit the Royal College of Surgeons website. John Hunter was the most famous surgeon of the 18th Century, a maverick pioneer who was responsible for the advancement in a number of medical fields. For a compelling read with none of the gruesome bits left out, pick up a copy of The Knife Man by Wendy Moore, a biography of John Hunter.

The 'model' Tattooed Gent

These tremendous dolls combine several of Battle's favourite things in one; tattoo's, powerful moustaches and amazing pieces of handycraft. Each of these charming characters are lovingly created by American crafter/artist Mimi Kirchner.

If you visit Mimi's site or etsy shop, you better move quickly as each of these Gent's are never around for long. Battle SPACE will be featuring more Tattoo related wonders later this month.

Travelling in (mini) Style

At Battle, we always begin to question alternative modes of transport on a Sunday after our drive down to the coast. Perhaps not a vehicle for long distances, the Custer Park Car was an alternative fuel vehicle designed for the more petite person.
Battery powered, these amazing vehicles from the 1920's and 30's would avoid todays Congestion Charge but perhaps not provide the adequate protection required from London's overzealous bus drivers. Arriving in the shop next week we have two pedal cars with a design reminiscent of the Custer Car.

Anatomically correct - Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery

One of our favourite purchases of recent weeks is definitely Taschen's amazing collection of Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery's studies of anatomical drawings, Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery. Bourgery's monumental tome contains hundreds of beautifully drawn colour plates starting with in depth studies of the human body and then moving on, for the more grissly minded, to detailed surgical procedures of the 19th century.

Bourgery began his work on this epic volume in 1830, having received his doctorate in medicine three years prior. Working in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871), Bourgery spent the next twenty years completing this masterpiece until his death in 1849.
The above pictures really don't do this fantastic book justice. We cannot recommend highly enough picking up a copy for yourself. Whether you are interested in human anatomy or simply have a slightly morbid curious side to your personality, this book will entertain you for hours. With the Surgical procedures of the 1830's perhaps leaving you glad you live in the 21st century...not for the faint hearted.

Polar Exploration.....in London

As the Train pulled into London this evening the snow was falling heavily once again. Questioning my current choice in clothing, I thought "how would a real explorer deal with these Arctic conditions?"
Fur was clearly de rigeur and would unfortunately be frowned upon on the 18:49 to Victoria. Snow shoes as a choice of footwear would perhaps also raise an eyebrow or two, but my Polar explorer 'get up' would definitely guarantee me a seat and a warm walk home.

Natural History - Latest Purchases

At Battle, we love Taxidermy and Natural history specimens; here's a selection of our latest purchases that will be coming into the shop over the next few weeks. The Tigers head dates from the 1920's; faded grandeur adds to the charm of this piece.
Three sets of Shark jaws, the largest measuring 42cm wide, look fantastic arranged as a trio on a surface. Why not combine them with the Turtle (above) for a marine display?

A Relish for a real Gent

Gentleman's Relish is still made to the highly secret recipe first formulated in 1828 by John Osborn. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, known only to one employee of the company at any one time.
Surely for a true taste of England, there can't be many homelier tastes than that of Gentleman's Relish spread thinly on freshly buttered toast perhaps with a slice or two of cucumber. With its distinct salty fishy taste it is maybe an acquired taste, but one we love.
If you are feeling adventurous why not try a little Gentleman's Relish mixed into scrambled eggs. Find yourself enjoying Patum Peperium? Why not give Poachers Relish a try; made with Smoked Salmon and Lemon zest.

A true Gentleman's Umbrella

Rainy days really are very English, and at the moment aren't we all feeling a little frustrated by that particular part of our "Britishness"? Founded in 1750 Swaine Adeney received their first Royal Warrant from George III. In 1943 the company merged with Brigg and Sons the Royal Umbrella Makers. Brigg umbrellas are exquisite items, world renowned for their durability and inimitable class.
With beautifully burnished wooden handles, lustrous sterling silver nose caps and the finest hand woven silks, a Brigg umbrella is as English as the Eton Collar or the Bowler Hat.
With prices starting at around £200, admitedly true style in the rain doesn't come cheap. A particular favourite of ours is the Lizard skin Umbrella (above).
But we say why not embrace Britishness? Go forth armed with a Swaine Adeney Brigg umbrella!

Alexander McQueen - FW 09 "McQueensbury rules"

With a catwalk that resembled something from Victorian London, Alexander McQueen's FW 09 menswears collection was definitely rooted in history. Entitled McQueensbury after the Marquis of Queensbury, whose name became synonomous with fair play in the Boxing ring there was definitely a tough feel to the show.

The cast of models and professional boxers were clad in slim-fit Edwardian suits in Harris Tweed and sturdy wools; shirts collars were tiny, a big trend here, and all the men wore boots, burnished at the toe, another Milan must-have this season. Topcoats were cut short; the better for a pub brawl, and every model wore short hats, either mini brim Trilbies or more rakish Homburgs.

Battles Current Window - "Fragile" February

Our current window display is a meeting of Antiques and common packing materials, with pieces dressed by materials that we wouldn't usually see unless moving house or perhaps transporting that delicate item we love.
A fantastic ebonised Boulle work bookcase from late 19th century; with movable shelves to accommodate even those large books that we all struggle to house. It is inlaid with brass, mother of pearl and ivory to both the doors and pediment. £950

The 18th century corner cupboard (above centre) has its original paint work to the interior and its galleried top still intact. The religious print applied to the cupboard door lifts it from the norm, and is one of our favourite pieces in the shop. £620
These library steps date from around the turn of the century, and are a great addition to any library or home. Both attractive and practical, we have two sets in stock at present. The one above being the tallest standing at just under one metre eighty centimetres. From £380 - £420.

Hendricks - A Most Unusual Gin

Hendricks truly is a most unusual Gin. Infused firstly with a hint of Bulgarian Rose combined then with Cucumber. This then initiates the slow infusion process that extracts the essential subtle flavours, which are then painstakingly infused into the spirit, one small batch at a time.

With a bottle resembling something you would find within an apothecary, Hendricks packaging gives a subtle nod to Gin's medicinal roots. With suggestions from their mixologists to garnish Gin and Tonics with cucumber instead of lime and with slogans such as "Preferred by 1 out of 1000 gin drinkers", Hendricks will not be to everyones taste but in our mind there is only one Gin.

Geo. F. Trumper - A Gentlemans Refuge

Trumper’s was established as a Gentlemen’s Hairdresser by George Francis William Trumper in 1875.

Mr Trumper was not only an excellent barber, but also a master perfumer and soon gained a reputation as such amongst the gentlemen of London’s elite, gaining its Royal Warrant under Victoria's reign and continuing with five subsequent royal warrants to this day.

Their two shops, one in Mayfair, the other on Jermyn Street, both have fantastic atmospheres in part created by the mix of fragrances that greet you at the threshold coupled with the wooden cabinet lined walls containing a vast array of neatly lined bottles of various grooming products.

Whether you are looking for a traditional wet shave, moustache grooming accessories or simply want to step back in time for a few minutes; Trumper's is well worth a visit.

Fantastic Man - A Gentleman's Style Journal

Fantastic Man magazine is perhaps one of the most well thought out pieces of publication available on the news stands. Engrossing articles and beautiful photo shoots coupled with the choice of paper stock and the clean graphic design makes Fantastic Man always a treat to read.

The current issue, number 8, is still available in shops and features articles on Bowler hats, spectacles, Chanel menswear and Fergus Henderson the Head chef of St. John and St. John Bread and wine. (Battle SPACE will be featuring this great restaurant later in the month)
